After you’ve worked on your first website for some time and realized that visitors do not magically arrive at your virtual doorstep, you start to learn a little about traffic generation. Among the first things you’ll likely come across is building links. Let us take a look at what link building is and just how it can help you in your online business.
What Is A Link?
A link is a connector between two web pages. It can connect an article on your website to a category or home page, or perhaps another article on the same site. Those are considered internal links because they connect one section of your website to another.
And then there are external links which connect a page of one website to that of another. For instance, when I write an article and post it in an article directory, I link my article page on the directory to a page on my own website via the link.
What Is Link Building?
Link building involves a process of putting links to your website on other sites. To put it differently it is a procedure for making more connections. This can be done by writing articles and publishing them to directories. Composing guest blog posts and adding a few links back to your website is a different way to develop quality links.
A few other ways to build links include directory submissions, commenting on blogs, forum participation, setting up various profile pages, social bookmarking, press release submissions and much more. Thus far there have been a number of courses and books released on how to build links.
Why Is Link Building Important For SEO?
Why is link building so important and has a lot of us investing countless hours out of our week on this task? For starters, because it generates those connections or highways between pages and sites which of course sends some visitors our way.
A much more essential reason for building links is to get your site to rank well in the search engines and in this way get a lot of free traffic to your site. This is the reason that link building is important for search engine optimization.
The anchor text or the text that you use to create the link is the second most essential aspect for positioning a page in the search engines. The title tag is the first. A mix of the title tags and the backlinks compensate for 80% of a site s rankings. This means that you must ensure that you use the right titles and ensure that your backlinks contain anchor text with your keywords included so that you can rank in the search engines for those terms. You’ll need quite a few backlinks if you are trying to rank for a competitive keyword but it is possible with some work.
Try it out. Locate a long tail keyword and create a short blog post or article about it. Be sure to include your keyword in the title tag (as early as possible in the tag) and after that build a few links to that page using your keyword in the anchor text. For almost all long tail keywords 2 or 3 good links is all you need to get it to rank on the first page of the search engines.
