Swiss reject single health insurance

Monday, March 12, 2007

24 of 26 Swiss Cantons rejected the proposal for a single health insurance system, in which premiums would be based on income and wealth. The vote on Sunday was the latest in a series of attempts to cut rising costs and ease the financial burden on citizens.

Around 71% of voters rejected the reform. Turnout was at about 46%, slightly above the Swiss average.

As expected, voters in the main German-speaking part of the country turned down the planned reform, which was supported by the centre-left but opposed by the centre-right as well as the business community, parliament and the government.

Opposition in the French and Italian speaking regions was less pronounced. The cantons Jura and Neuchâtel in the French speaking regions voted in favor of the proposed reforms.

Health insurance premiums are higher in southern and western Swiss cantons than in German-speaking areas.

The Swiss Interior Minister Pascal Couchepin said an important part of the Swiss Population appeared to be opposed to “a revolution” in health insurance but he said that he wanted current reforms currently under discussion in the Swiss Parliament to go ahead. He called on all sides, especially health insurers and the cantonal authorities, to make efforts to reduce spending on health insurance and aim for a greater cost efficiency. Currently Switzerland has 87 private insurers providing mandatory basic health care coverage for Swiss residents under a 1996 law. But costs have sky-rocketed. Over 100,000 people are not covered by health insurance due to non payment.

To win the battle of the cost of health care, everyone must place his or her private interests behind the interests of the general public. -Pascal Couchepin at a news conference

Opponents to the initiative argued that a single insurance system would lead to complacency and create a two-tier system, in which the wealthy would be the only ones available to afford to have additional private insurance coverage.

Supporters of the initiative said a single health insurer would increase the system’s efficiency and allow for annual savings of at least 300 million Swiss Francs (about $245 million) in administrative costs. Currently, the funding system is unbalanced, since many clients on low incomes use state subsidies to pay their premiums, according to the Green Party and the Social Democrats.

The initiative to unite all the insurance companies and introduce premiums based on wealth and income was the most recent in a series of attempts over the past ten years to reduce the public spending on health care. A proposal, similar to this recent proposal, to modify the funding system of the health insurance companies was rejected by 73% of voters in 2003.

Switzerland has the most expensive health system in Europe. Switzerland’s expenditure on health care was 11.6% in 2005, in front of Germany and France but behind the United States.

Four Steps To Finding A Great Used Car At A Fair Price

byAlma Abell

Buying a late model used car is nowhere near as risky today as it was a few years ago. Modern manufacturing methods and state of the art technology has resulted in Cadillac used cars in Michigan a far better buy than ever. If you have your sights set on a used Cadillac there are four steps that you should consider taking to ensure you get a great car at a fair price.

 • Research: It’s fair to say that the best new cars are also the best used cars. Spend time researching; find out for yourself what cars are well known for being reliable. There are numerous web sites that offer unbiased opinions backed up with facts on what are the best used cars as well as what are the ones to stay away from.
 • The once over: Once you have identified a few prospective used cars give them a good once over, but do it during the day, not under the lights. During the day you can see any evidence of body repair or other damage. Make sure the car sits straight, if it tilts to the left, right, front or back give it a pass.

Pay attention to areas where body panels meet, for example, where the hood meets the body. These lines must be straight; the distance between the panels must be the same from front to back.

Cars that have been involved in an accident will often be repainted as part of the repair. Check around the edges of the doors, trunk and engine compartment for any evidence of spray. Lift the mat in the trunk, if the car has been repainted you will know it when you look in this out-of-the-way spot.

 • The test drive: Driving it around the block will tell you nothing about the car. Tell the dealer of Cadillac used cars in Michigan that you want at least 30 minutes to drive the car on different surfaces and at different speeds. Look for things like wind rush noise, unusual rattles, steering that pulls to one side or another or brakes that fade.
 • Independent inspection: If you were impressed with the car after the test drive, now it’s time to get really serious. All used cars should be looked at by an independent mechanic, it will cost you perhaps $100 but it is money well spent.

If the car passes your tests now is the time to talk money, not before. With a little due diligence and hard bargaining you will drive away in a great used car and you will have got it for a fair price.

If you are looking for Cadillac used cars in Michigan that offer tremendous value you are invited to visit Jim Riehl’s Friendly Cadillac of Clinton Township.

Nigerian sentenced to death for admitting to gay relations

Saturday, July 9, 2005Philip Alston, an official with the United Nations is decrying a Nigerian court decision to sentence a 50-year-old man to death by stoning after he admitted to having sex with another man. Reports have not named the individual.

The incident in question happened after the 50-year-old man was acquitted of charges that he had sexual relations with a much younger man. During further questioning, the judge asked the accused if he ever had sex with any other men.

Upon answering yes, the judge convicted the man of sodomy and sentenced him to death by stoning.

Nigeria, the most populous African country, is one of many countries that has started to adopt Sharia, or traditional Islamic law as detailed in the Koran. Since 2000, 12 of Nigeria’s northernmost states have adopted Sharia codes for their courtrooms. Under Islamic law, homosexual conduct is a crime punishable by death.

“Sodomy cannot be considered one of the most serious crimes for which, under international law, the death penalty can be prescribed. The punishment is wholly disproportionate,” Alston, U.N. Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions, said in a written statement Friday.

Nigeria’s southern states are mostly Christian and do not follow Sharia law.

Thursday, December 17, 2009

Pakistani intelligence officials said earlier today that two suspected US drone attacks in Taliban-dominated tribal areas of the country have killed at least a dozen people, although some reports put the number as high as seventeen.

The first attack targeted a vehicle carrying two suspected militants in the town of Dosali, in the North Waziristan tribal area near the Afghan border.

Hours later elsewhere in North Waziristan, officials reported that several drones fired seven missiles into suspected militant compounds. They added that the death toll could rise. However, it was not immediately clear how many Taliban members were killed in the strikes.

“Seven missiles were fired. They hit a cave complex, a compound and a vehicle,” said a Pakistani official, as quoted by the Reuters news agency.

Saudi Arabia: Princes arrested after protesting austerity

Monday, January 8, 2018

On Thursday, eleven princes were arrested in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; authorities announced in a statement on Saturday. The princes were reportedly arrested for participating in a protest against austerity measures in the kingdom.

Authorities ascribed these arrests to a wider crackdown on corruption but did not name any of those arrested. Those arrested are being detained at al-Ha’ir Prison. “No one is above the law in Saudi Arabia. Everyone is equal and is treated the same as others,” said Saturday’s official statement.

News of the protest and arrests first broke on Friday on a website known as Sabq. The Saudi royal family may number in the thousands, and the government recently announced an end to paying for their water and energy bills. The protest, which is being described as a sit-in at the Qasr al-Hokm royal palace, was in opposition to the cuts in royal benefits, but also related to the murder conviction and execution of a cousin of theirs in 2016, calling for compensation for his death.

Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman has been overseeing anti-corruption, austerity and social reforms programs since late last year, which included giving women the right to drive automobiles. Besides cutting the aforementioned benefits for members of the royal family, the austerity program has also included doubling domestic gasoline prices and levying new taxes on most goods and services. Offsetting some of these measures, King Salman stepped in, saying students, government employees and military personnel would receive cost-of-living allowances, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

Thursday, November 16, 2006

Buffalo, New York —A proposed hotel that was supposed to be built at the corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, New York is apparently off the table. The former proposal was going to be called The Elmwood Village Hotel and would have consisted of 72 rooms and cost between $7 to $10 million American dollars to build.

Today several unknown individuals were seen removing a sign that was dedicated to the “Elmwood Village Gateway,” which signifies the beginning of the Elmwood Village at the formerly proposed project’s location.

Nearly an hour later the men replaced the sign with a different and unexpected sign: “For Sale: 5 commercial parcels and 1 carriage house, By: Owner.” Those 5 “parcels” are 1109-1121 Elmwood and 999 Forest Avenue, which is located in an illegal alley, according to the City of Buffalo, behind the 5 other properties on Elmwood. Hans Mobius owns all properties named in the sale.

Sam Savarino, CEO of Savarino Companies never owned the properties and has repeatadly told Wikinews in exclusive interviews that he still had a “contract to buy the properties” and on October 2, 2006 told Wikinews in an exclusive interview that he “extended” the “agreement to purchase the property[s] and will have it under contract for what we hope is a sufficient period of time.”

“He [Mobius] is undoubtedly concerned because he has lost some tenants and is a bit impatient. I think he has properly portrayed the situation,” said Savarino in an exclusive interview with Wikinews.

Savarino also says that there may be “legal issues” to work out now, before anything else can move forward, regarding the proposal.

“There are some legal complexities that must be sorted out before anything can happen there,” added Savarino.

The welcome sign was; however, not removed entirely. The sign was placed, facing the same direction of north, on the side of the Forest Plaza Art Gallery, a new art gallery located on the corner of Forest and Elmwood.

Nancy Pollina, owner of Don Apparel which was located at 1109 Elmwood, but closed on October 14, 2006 considers this a possible “victory” in regards to the lawsuit filed against the hotel to stop it from being built, alleging that several laws were broken, including not performing an Environmental Impact Study before the proposal was approved by the city, during its approval and the proposal was “rushed.” Patricia Morris, who operates Don Apparel with Pollina, Angeline Genovese and Evelyn Bencinich, owners of residences on Granger Place which abut the rear of the proposed site, Nina Freudenheim, a resident of nearby Penhurst Park, and Sandra Girage, the owner of a two-family residence on Forest Avenue less than a hundred feet from the proposed hotel’s sole entrance and exit driveway, were also plaintiffs in the lawsuit. They filed the suit with a lawyer representing them, Arthur J. Giacalone, on April 25, 2006 in New York State Supreme Court, but the case has never gone to a courtroom.

Giacalone believes that a press release issued in July regarding the project was nothing but a statement to “save face,” but that the placement of the for sale sign might be a way of convincing Savarino to speed up the sale of the properties.

“I thought all along that Savarino’s July press release might be no more than an effort to save face. But we have no way of knowing. Similarly, Mobius might have put the for-sale sign up in an attempt to pressure Savarino into closing the deal. There’s no way to tell,” said Giacalone in an exclusive interview with Wikinews.

In regards to the lawsuit, Giacalone thinks it may now be in “limbo.”

“The lawsuit still sits in limbo,” added Giacalone.

British white paper on public health

Wednesday, November 17, 2004

ENGLAND — UK Health Secretary John Reid has proposed widespread legislative and health care changes in a new white paper on public health released Tuesday. Titled “Choosing Health”, the paper details government plans to restrict smoking in public places, limit ‘junk food‘ advertisements to children, make available “lifestyle trainers”, campaign against sexually transmitted diseases and tobacco, and improve food labelling.

The white paper comes after extensive public comment that involved 150,000 people.

Smoking would be restricted in enclosed public spaces, restaurants, workplaces, and some pubs. The ban would be enacted gradually, affecting government and NHS buildings in 2006, enclosed public places in 2007, and private property in 2008. Permanent exemption would be granted to pubs that do not serve prepared food — though not at the bar — as well as private clubs, a decision that has provoked some to call the measure incomplete. Up to 90% of pubs are expected to be affected. The Scottish executive proposed a complete ban on smoking in enclosed public places last week, and Ireland has already banned smoking in pubs and restaurants.

Food advertisements targeted to children would be banned until 9pm, under the White Paper’s proposals. The restriction is a measure to tackle rising rates of childhood obesity. The government also intends to develop voluntary standards on food and drink advertisements to children with industry, only threatening legislation if an acceptable standard is not reached by 2007. Additionally, low income families would receive vouchers for fresh fruit, vegetables, milk, and infant formula. School lunches would also be held to stricter nutritional standards. Reid has warned that unless childhood obesity is tackled, “we face the prospect of children having shorter life expectancy than their parents”.

Food labelling would also be improved, with a “traffic light” system implemented. Packaged food would be evaluated based on its fat, sugar, and salt content.

The paper is unusual for suggesting a more holistic approach to health care, offering for the first time “lifestyle trainers.” The National Health Service would be funding with an additional £1bn to make people’s overall lives healthier, which is expected to save £30bn in preventable illness.

The paper additionally makes mention of reducing accidents, which affected 2.7m people last year and is a leading cause of child death, curb binge drinking, and reduce substance abuse among youths.

The paper has been criticized by many parties. The Tory Shadow Health Secretary has criticized the Labour government’s comprehensiveness and creation of a “new nanny state approach”. He has additionally described it as “gimmicks”. The Liberal Democrats have accused the government of not being comprehensive enough. It has also been criticized by the British Medical Association as being implemented too slowly, saying “When lives need saving, doctors act immediately”.

Mr. Reid has argued against the nanny state label, saying “In a free society, men and women ultimately have the right within the law to choose their own lifestyle, even when it may damage their own health. But people do not have the right to damage the health of others, or to impose an intolerable degree of inconvenience or nuisance on others … This is a sensible solution which balances the protection of the majority with the personal freedom of the minority in England”.

The full white paper “Choosing Health” can be read here.

Financial Trends Changing What Else?

Financial Trends ChangingWhat Else? Have you notice how financial trends are changing? Interest rates are going up, economy is unstable, new housing is slowing down. This is not the only trend that I have noticed.

Back in the late 60’s and early 70’s America had a great drive to create entrepreneurs. People woke up, saw a big picture, a glimpse of financial freedom and took the chance when opportunity knocked. They were not trapped by the corporate world. They focused on financial abundance, not a pension plan. Dreams, goals, visions were born, properly fueled and monumental business, buildings, automobiles, inventions and gadgets were alive and kicking. Back then, we had no idea what a 401K was. Heck, for all we knew, that was the time that someone had the idea of a 401K.

What do we have now? A mess as I see it! Look at all the people crowding the highways, freeways, streets and public transportation rushing to their all-important job. Have you ever noticed the look on peoples face as they get off the 6pm. train from downtown? How about the people who get off the 8 or 9 pm. train? Wow, they look happy. And think, they get to do it all over again tomorrow! How exciting!

What happened to the financial dreams of yours? This is very simple and can be summed up in one word. Comfort! Yes, I said comfort. Along came Corporate America, tens of thousands of people owning faceless organizations, creating jobs. They were so good at creating jobs as a matter of fact, they created jobs for jobs. The thought process was simple, why chance anything when I can go to work for X Corporation, get paid a salary, get a pension, get a 401K, get insurance and in some cases, a company car. I always have and always will view being comfortable as stagnation. Think about that for a minute, especially top sales people. What happened when you were on top of your game and you became comfortable? You see I am correct. If you’re honest, you slide down the pole. You were no longer the top sales person; you were the old man everyone laughed at. All of a sudden you had to work twice as hard to make sales instead of keeping the pace you had going with some effort.

What no one knew, was the dark secrete. As these companies grew and money was flowing they were really out of control. Financial control to be more exact. While these companies were spinning out of control, they had the bright idea to hire financial advisors to find the leak and fix it. A few methods were utilized to solve the problem. Some companies merged, some closed, some moved off shore, some did cut backs and some, like Enron, used creative, illegal was to survive.

The truth is, Corporate America, as dwindling as it is, is all about the bottom dollar. As people traded in their dreams of financial freedom, million dollar houses, fancy cars that they could actually own, not finance, Corporate America was still in its growing stage, not fully seasoned. Now, companies are indeed cutting back, eliminating all excess baggage. How many of you know someone whose company has cut back or eliminated the pension plan. It was a great concept on paper, but companies probably did not count on the baby boomers all collecting their pension at the same time. Nor did they consider corrupt accounting, bad investments, etc. The fund is empty, it can’t pay. Interesting, indeed. I don’t even want to depress you further and discuss the long-term retirement plan called 401K. Again, great on paper until your portfolio crashes and you now have nothing.. “Hello Wal Mart, can I be a greeter, I know I can do it as I was once a CEO of a major corporation. ”

Now the trend is changing. Have you noticed the surge toward home-based businesses? I have, and the truth is, it all makes sense. If you’re working over 40 hours a week, no doubt you are making your boss look good and the company money. But, what are you gaining from it? A pat on the back with one hand and a new project placed in the other hand. When you go to work, are your spouse and children still sleeping, and are that the same picture when you get home. Sad, but true for most of you. Do you realize that there are many legitimate, home-based businesses that offer financial freedom? Think about this, if you found the right income opportunity, made a small financial investment, put half of the energy that you put towards your job in terms of preparation to go to work, work and managing your jobs stress after too long of a day at the office, do you think you could have success? I do, especially if you have ample training, one on one coaching and a true desire to achieve financial freedom.

My humble advise: Catch the wave for this decade and stop fooling yourself with JOB security. You deserve more and can achieve more than Corporate America is offering. Do some home work and look into a career at home, you may be surprised!

State of emergency declared in New York over H1N1 swine flu virus

Thursday, October 29, 2009

According to US health officials, New York state governor David Paterson has declared a state of emergency in the state as a result of the H1N1 swine flu outbreak.

The Associated Press news agency reports that the six-page declaration was issued because at least 75 people have died of H1N1 related illnesses in New York since April. Three have died from H1N1 related illnesses just this past week. The declaration also says that human cases of the virus are on the rise.

Paterson says he issued the declaration because “a disaster has occurred throughout New York State, for which the affected local governments are unable to respond adequately.”

The declaration will allow health officials more access to the H1N1 vaccine and the seasonal flu shot. It will also allow for an increase in the number of vaccine doses available in the state and will allow more health care facilities to administer the vaccine, including dentists and pharmacists. Schools with health centers will also be allowed to administer both vaccines.

Despite the declaration, officials stressed that there is no reason to worry. A spokeswoman for the New York State Department of Health, Claire Pospisil, said that “it [the declaration] helps us to be more prepared.”

The order came shortly after US president Barack Obama declared a national emergency last Saturday, a response to the spreading of the virus, which has now been circulated in 46 states.
