Wikinews interviews World Wide Web co-inventor Robert Cailliau

Thursday, August 16, 2007

The name Robert Cailliau may not ring a bell to the general public, but his invention is the reason why you are reading this: Dr. Cailliau together with his colleague Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, making the internet accessible so it could grow from an academic tool to a mass communication medium. Last January Dr. Cailliau retired from CERN, the European particle physics lab where the WWW emerged.

Wikinews offered the engineer a virtual beer from his native country Belgium, and conducted an e-mail interview with him (which started about three weeks ago) about the history and the future of the web and his life and work.

Wikinews: At the start of this interview, we would like to offer you a fresh pint on a terrace, but since this is an e-mail interview, we will limit ourselves to a virtual beer, which you can enjoy here.

Robert Cailliau: Yes, I myself once (at the 2nd international WWW Conference, Chicago) said that there is no such thing as a virtual beer: people will still want to sit together. Anyway, here we go.

The Quick Start, Five Step Spanish Property Guide

By Sandy Lee

With an ideal climate and increasing tourism and development, Spain is becoming a very popular destination for buying property. With coastal apartments that have exquisite sea views, villas with swimming pools and a range of nightlife, it’s not hard to see why many Britons are exchanging the rainy days for the sun. But it can be quite difficult to find all of the information you need to help make those important decisions. For those wishing to make an investment or to relocate, here’s a quick start guide to buying Spanish property.

1. Where to buy?

It’s important to know not only what you want from your Spanish property, but also the location around it. What kind of views do you imagine from your villa or apartment? Such areas as Albanchez offer traditional Spanish countryside scenery. If you are looking for a more relaxing quiet life with orange and lemon groves, winding streets and tranquil a atmosphere, then areas such as Albenchez are a perfect location. Mojacar in the Carbrera Mountain range and Almeria, situated on the southern Mediterranean coast are perfect for getting away from a busy pace of life. Garrucha is also situated in the region of Almeria and has a bustling fishing port, supplying many of the local restaurants and other local eateries. The town centre has plenty of shops and markets and a range of bars and clubs for a vibrant evening out. It is also important that the location is easy to get to, so find out where the nearest airports are and what destinations are available from them.

2. Finding a good mortgage.

There are a number of lenders offering a range of Spanish mortgages. Remember that Spanish mortgage interest charges are set by the European Central Bank, but each bank still holds a number of options. As a result, rates can even vary from branch to branch. You need to make sure that you shop around and look at the different options available to you. If you go with a broker, do your research thoroughly, as choosing the wrong broker might meant that you end up paying more than you need too. Fixed rate mortgages are popular for overseas buyers, as it means that you will always know what you are paying out and so can plan accurately for the future.

3. How to buy?

Finding a good property agent is essential in buying property overseas. If you know which area you would like to buy in, look for agents that deal specifically in that location. They will have an excellent knowledge of the types of property that would suit your needs, whether it is a holiday home or something more permanent. Make sure they know what you want and arrange an appointment to meet them face to face. Choose an agent that has high customer service standards and focuses on helping you find what you want rather than just offering you what they already have. Smaller agencies tend to focus on quality and take your interests seriously.

4. Get a good lawyer.

It’s common sense to get a good lawyer, especially when buying in another country. Finding one that speaks very good English (which many of them do) is essential, so that there is always a clear understanding of what is happening. Agencies can suggest lawyers but make sure they have a good track record and look for personal recommendations, which is easy if you look through people’s buying blogs on the internet. Why not get in touch with someone who has made a recommendation directly? This way you can ask lots of questions and get a good all-round view. Remember that your lawyer will need to help if there are any complications, and will be there to check your paperwork before you sign it so that everything is in order. They will open a Spanish bank account for you and look out for any inconsistencies in paperwork, so you need to be confident about who you employ.

5. Budget.

Make yourself a list of what you need from your property, including the number of bedrooms and stick to it. Don’t let yourself be talked into expanding beyond your means. If you add on around 10% so that you take into account taxes and fees, you can make sure that you have covered yourself financially and don’t fall into any nasty traps. Ask as many questions as you can and see properties you are interested in as many times as possible. Remember you can always negotiate on price; if you can get it for cheaper than the asking price you can spend that money on any alterations or adjustments that are needed. A good lawyer will make you aware of any taxes that are attached to buying a property in a specific area.

Suspected US drone strikes kill twelve in western Pakistan

Thursday, December 17, 2009

Pakistani intelligence officials said earlier today that two suspected US drone attacks in Taliban-dominated tribal areas of the country have killed at least a dozen people, although some reports put the number as high as seventeen.

The first attack targeted a vehicle carrying two suspected militants in the town of Dosali, in the North Waziristan tribal area near the Afghan border.

Hours later elsewhere in North Waziristan, officials reported that several drones fired seven missiles into suspected militant compounds. They added that the death toll could rise. However, it was not immediately clear how many Taliban members were killed in the strikes.

“Seven missiles were fired. They hit a cave complex, a compound and a vehicle,” said a Pakistani official, as quoted by the Reuters news agency.

Saskatchewan places moratorium on boar farming, says escaped boars should be killed

Saturday, March 14, 2009

At the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) conference, a resolution was passed that encourages the Government of Saskatchewan, Canada to place a moratorium on specialty livestock farms raising wild boar. All wild boars that have escaped to roam wild should be killed, according to the resolution.

Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud endorses a ban on wild boar farming. The wild boar population is expanding exponentially. There are over 2,000 feral Sus scrofa swine roaming the prairies. Two litters of approximately 12 piglets are sired by each wild boar sow every year. The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) likewise passed a similar resolution at their 79th annual convention to urge the Saskatchewan Government to declare the wild boar as a nuisance species which can be killed on sight.

3% of farmed “wild” boars escape. Cells of wild boars are ravenous creatures killing and eating everything in their path. Horses, cows, and other livestock run from wild boars, breaking through fences in the process.

Ostriches, emus, llamas, alpacas, reindeer, wild boar, and fallow deer were amongst the animals introduced to farms in Saskatchewan during the agricultural diversification program in the late 1970s. Production of wild boars was promoted throughout the 1980s.

According to the Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food 2001 statistics, there were 150 wild boar producers raising approximately 15,000 and 20,000 head. Of these there were about 2,700 sows. On the 2006 Census of Agriculture, 401 farms reported 4,926 boars.

The boar’s red meat is an export commodity to Europe and Asia. The live breeding stock are also sold to trophy hunt ranches. Full blooded wild boar and hybrid crosses are raised.

Home Health Care A Service You Should Take}

Submitted by: Rina Riccobono

The purpose of home care is to promote, maintain, or restore a patient’s health and reduce the effects of disease or disability. “Armageddon” rock misses Earth by Moon’s distance

Sunday, July 2, 2006

Asteroid 2004 XP14, a half-mile wide chunk of hard rock travelling at 40 000 miles an hour, will miss the Earth by a few hundred thousand miles, Monday.

Dr David Asher from the Armagh Observatory in Northern Ireland said if the rock, discovered in 2004, were to hit the Earth the result would be devastating. “It would probably be big enough to wipe out a small country,” he said.

Amateur astronomers with 6-inch telescopes would be able to follow the speeding space debris in Europe and North America at its closest approach to the planet at 0425 UTC.

At this time it would be at a safe distance of 268,624 miles from Earth – closer to the Earth than the Moon would be at its farthest extent in its orbit.

2004 XP14 is named as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA), along with 782 known others by Astronomers at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory at Harvard.

Zipping about in the solar system no PHAs have yet been found on direct collision course with the Earth. Still, “For something of this size to come this close is unusual,” said Don Yeomans, the head of NASA’s Near Earth Object Program.”

An expert at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California said it was the closest approach by such a massive object for over 80 years – since 1925.

Before 2004 XP14‘s exact orbital path around the sun was known with more precision, there were concerns it would hit the Earth.

In the near future Jon Giorgini said such cosmic uncertainty would be much less and the public less alarmed. “In the next 20 to 30 years, we’ll have a complete catalog of hazardous objects,” Giorgini said.

Edward Lu and Stanley Love, of Johnson Space Centre, Houston, also have allayed fears about a collision. In a 2005 article in Nature they theorised a “gravity tractor” could move any known threat within a year.

Andrea Muizelaar on fashion, anorexia, and life after ‘Top Model’

Monday, November 26, 2007

In the 18 months since Andrea Muizelaar was crowned winner of the reality TV series Canada’s Next Top Model, her life has been a complete whirlwind. From working in a dollar store in her hometown of Whitby, Ontario, to modeling haute couture in Toronto, she had reached her dream of becoming a true Top Model.

But at what cost? Unknown to casual television viewers, Muizelaar had been enveloped in the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, which inevitably became too much for her to bear. She gave up modeling and moved back to Whitby, where she sought treatment for her disorder, re-entered college, and now works at a bank. Where is she now? Happy and healthy, she says.

Recently Andrea Muizelaar sat down with Wikinews reporter Mike Halterman in a candid interview that stretched to nearly two hours, as she told all about her hopes and aspirations, her battle with anorexia, and just what really happened on Canada’s Next Top Model.

How Many Calories Should You Consume The First Few Months After Having Lap Band Surgery?

By Adriana N

With the obesity rates skyrocketing across the country, many overweight people are choosing to have weight loss surgery. Lap Band Surgery is one weight loss procedure that is becoming a popular choice for many obese people. This procedure involves inserting a band around the top part of the stomach to form a pouch. The pouch is then filled with saline to reduce the size of the stomach, thereby reducing food intake. When one has this surgery, they have to follow a strict diet. Certain foods are restricted while others are enforced. One such area is regulating the amount of calories consumed the first few months after the surgery.

The purpose of the lap band diet is to prevent vomiting and band slippage. During the first couple of weeks following lap band surgery, one should consume only thin and clear liquids that are not high in calories. The stomach needs to adjust to the lap band. Patients should ingest less than 800 calories of food each day for the first 12 months and then up to 1200 calories a day after 36 months.

One should not drink beverages that are high in calories because these calories are absorbed without making a person feel full. The result will be low weight loss. Such high calorie drinks to avoid include: soda, milkshakes, and alcohol. You should also avoid carbonated beverages as they will cause the band to expand. As well, carbonated beverages can cause gas and bloating. Soup, broth, and skim milk are good choices. Do not over eat as this will cause vomiting and discomfort. Thin low calorie liquids are the right foods to eat during this time. It important to drink water to keep hydrated.

Protein is essential during recovery from lap band surgery. At three to four weeks of the recovery period, thicker foods should be consumed such as purees. Pureed skinless chicken and fish are recommended. As well, one can consume pureed vegetables and fruits. One should consume about fifty to sixty grams of protein daily.

Two months after surgery one should have two ounces of other liquids that are sugar free or very low in sugar. At this time, a patient will be moving to a diet that has more texture and consistency such as shredded food. Foods consumed should be salads, fruit, and meat. Drinking liquids during and after meals will help the pouch flush properly. It is important to chew your food very well and swallow tiny pieces at a time. Your stomach can only hold about 2 ounces of food at this time.

Following lap band surgery, one must follow the exact dietary instructions given by the lap band surgery team. If you do not follow the diet and the amounts of food you are suppose to consume, there can be severe health complications which may cause more surgical procedures as well as having the lap band removed.

Lap band surgery is effective procedure to help one lose weight. When having lap band surgery, it is important to maintain the outlined diet directions and other instructions in order to ensure healthy and long term weight loss.
