Police remove valuables from unlocked cars

Thursday, August 27, 2009

Police officers in Richmond in south-west London, England are removing valuable items like handbags and laptops from unlocked vehicles and leaving notes telling owners to collect their items in Twickenham police station in a bid to try and encourage car drivers to lock the doors of their vehicles.

There is a high number of in-car thefts or “smash and grab” attacks in the borough. Last year, 1,300 of these attacks were reported in the area. 220 of those cases involved satellite navigation systems or sat-navs. But the numbers of these thefts occurring have been rising recently. The figure has risen by 40% until July.

25 cars have been targeted so far but there has been only one car where an item has been removed with a note left for the owner to collect it. If there is nothing on display but the car is unlocked the owner will be sent a letter telling them to be more careful. These tactics should only be attempted by police officers if they cannot find the owner nearby.

The project has received the backing of Richmond Council. A council spokesman from Richmond-upon-Thames said: “We have issues with theft in the borough — particularly theft from cars. We see our borough as a green and pleasant place. Car owners therefore can be lulled into a false sense of security in that they leave items displayed prominently in unlocked cars.”

IMF Offers Special Loan for Tsunami-Hit Countries

Wednesday, January 5, 2005

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Rodrigo Rato offered special relief funds for the countries victim of the tsunami disaster. The money is, however, in the form of a loan. The IMF has been present in the area on various occasions.

The IMF offered a one billion U.S. dollar loan. The money would be given as Emergency Natural Disaster Assistance facility, and would be repaid in full and with interests within 3¼ to 5 years.

The money could help the area tremendously, but since it is a loan as opposed to an outright donation, it may not be as helpful. The loan, some fear, may not lead to economic stability in the long run. Despite the possible long term effects, the governments of the tsunami torn nations may simply have no choice but to accept the offer.

Personal Computer Viruses And Malware: Improvements Of Anti Virus Collections

Submitted by: Robert Kokoska

Defending your computer from a virus is becoming much harder every 24 hours. While it may border upon the obsessed, it’s said that you can t leave your shield for 1 second. Even corporate behemoth Microsoft have discovered its private networks weakened on a little more than a single instance.

Bring to mind the “floppy disk days”. prior to the creation of the Internet as well as software applications? Life was straightforward in those times in terms of laptop viruses and adware. With the primary means in which a trojan might be transferred being restricted to floppy disks, the facility to ensnare and eliminate the trojan was a good deal less difficult. By today s standards, it would take quite a while before a virus or trojan might infect a PC and decelerate the device. The anti-virus software from that time was usually able to classify as well as get rid of trojans before they induced a lot of destruction. Additionally, PC users were pretty knowledgeable about how to guard themselves when it comes to scanning all floppy drives ahead of saving them on to our hard drive.

The World wide web helped to transform all that. The World wide web supplied a instrument via which viruses and malware could shift from computer to computer with lightening speed. No more would a desktop user solely fret from floppy disks as virus doorways, but people now began to be concerned over electronic mail, email files, p2p file distribution, instant messaging, as well as program downloads. Today s trojans can harm through many opening points, spread without individual interference, and take full advantage of weaknesses inside a computer or program. With know-how mounting every day, and the convergence of desktops with alternative phone equipment, the potential of up-to-the-minute types of viruses also grow.

Luckily, the advancement of anti virus application software has kept pace along with existing virus threats. Anti-virus software is currently crucial to a PC’s ability to thwart off viruses and worms as well as other bad applications. These products have been created to safe-guard against the capability of a trojan to enter a personal computer over email, net browsers, web servers in addition to desktops. Also, these software programs provide a central management capability that handles operation, setups and also updating. A personal computer user should stay meticulous and keep to a selection of straightforward steps to protect against the menace of a virus or trojan:

1. Re-evaluate your existing computer security settings.

With the hazard of a new generation of viruses and adware competent to strike in a large amount of different ways, the line of attack of downloading simply 1 anti-virus software form has become out-of-date. You will have to be sure that you have protected all facets within your personal computer system ranging from the laptop to the network connection, and also from your gateway to the server. Think about a much more far-reaching security system which consists of several features including antivirus, firewall, content filter, as well as incursion detection. This form of software will make it much more tricky for a trojan to make a way into your equipment.

2. Only ever download antivirus applications made by a known, trustworthy company.

As innovative viruses and adware break out day after day, it is vital that you often modernize your antivirus application. Become familiar with the software s real-time examination feature and set it to begin repeatedly every time you boot your notebook. That will safeguard your system through repeatedly examining your desktop each time it s started.

Car driven into Glasgow International Airport

Saturday, June 30, 2007

Glasgow International Airport in Renfrewshire, Scotland was evacuated after a green Jeep Cherokee struck the airport’s terminal building and burst into flames at 1511 BST.

An eyewitness told the BBC that “[A] man was on fire.” All flights are grounded, and two men have been arrested and the United Kingdom has raised the national threat level to “critical” which means another terror attack is imminent.

Eyewitnesses described a Jeep speeding toward the building with flames coming out from underneath. They also reported seeing two Asian men in the car, one of whom was on fire.

We saw a green Cherokee drive straight into the front door of the airport but it got jammed. They were obviously trying to get it further inside the airport as the wheels were spinning and smoke was coming from them. One of the men, I think it was the driver, brought out a plastic petrol canister and poured it under the car. He then set light to it.

The BBC quoted an eyewitness as saying that two attempts were made to ram the Jeep through the wall, and that the passenger was holding a lit Molotov Cocktail and made several attempts to throw the bottle.

The front of the building where the attack took place

The Strathclyde Police Chief announced that the event is being linked to the earlier attempted car bombings in London, and as such is being treated as a terrorist investigation.

Eyewitnesses are now saying that one of the two men was pouring bottles of petrol into the car’s interior and onto himself, before running from the car, on fire, into the main terminal building. Witnesses have also reported that gas cylinders were removed by bystanders from the burning vehicle.

According to the BBC, the driver of the vehicle put up a violent struggle before being overpowered by the police and public. One person who tackled him was Stephen Clarkson, a member of the public.

Richard Gray, an eyewitness to the event, stated “There was an Asian guy who was pulled out of the car by two police officers.”

Seven people have been taken to local hospitals with injuries.

Police said that this incident was a deliberate attempt and not a road accident. Officials have also said that the incident is connected to earlier attempted car bombings in London the day before.

Two people have been arrested, one of whom was badly burned. Seven known casualties, including the Asian male have been taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley.

While the suspect was being treated in the hospital, a suspect device was discovered in the hospital, resulting in the partial evacuation of the building while the device was moved to a safe area. This object later turned out to be mundane, although initial reports believed it to be a suicide belt.

The first duty of the Government is the security and safety of all the British people, So it is right to raise the levels of security at airports and in crowded places in the light of the heightened threat. I know that the British people will stand together: united, resolute and strong.

The BBC announced that the Prime Minister is being kept fully informed. He chaired a meeting of Civil Contingencies Committee (COBRA) at 1900 (BST), after which the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, announced that the national threat level been elevated from “Severe” to “Critical”, meaning another attack is expected “imminently.”

Officials at Edinburgh Airport have said that all cars are being turned away from the airport, and at Heathrow in London, passengers are being advised not to bring private cars near to the terminal buildings. Some passengers were kept waiting in planes while the area was secured.

The first bomber, who was taken to Govan high security prison, has now been interviewed, though no further statements from Strathclyde police have been forthcoming. The second bomber, who was taken to the Royal Alexandria hospital in Paisley, is listed in critical condition tonight, and is being kept under 24-hour guard.

2,300 passengers who were due to set off from Glasgow Airport today have been driven by coach to a conference centre, where a reception area has been set up for them.

Two people were arrested by The Metropolitan Police Anti-Terrorist Branch on the M6 motorway in Cheshire in connection with the Glasgow International Airport attack and attempted London car bombings.

The Prime Minister Gordon Brown is expected to hold another COBRA meeting with other members of the Cabinet today. This will be the fifth COBRA meeting in 48 hours.

Woman killed in house fire in South Yorkshire, England

Monday, January 25, 2010

Map of England with South Yorkshire in red.

An elderly woman has died in a house fire in South Yorkshire, England. The woman, who is currently remaining unidentified, was blind and 93-years-old when her bungalow in Sheffield caught fire as a result of an accident in her kitchen yesterday afternoon.

An internal investigation into the fire has suggested that while the woman was cooking, she dropped a towel onto one of the stovetops while attempting to move a pan on the cooker. The towel then set alight. When she attempted to put out the fire, the towel dropped to the side of the cooker, alongside some plastic bags.

A smoke alarm sounded; a nearby resident heard the alarm and went to assist. The neighbour managed to break into the bedroom window of the bungalow in order to be able to get inside the building. The person made it to the hallway but had to double back upon seeing the fire and the smoke. It is believed that the woman was overwhelmed by the fumes given out from the plastic which was burning.

At around 1350 GMT, fire service workers entered the elderly lady’s residence to find her collapsed inside the kitchen. People investigating the incident have come to the conclusion that this particular fire was an accidental one. A spokesperson for the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service noted: “Neighbours who tried to enter the property were fought back by smoke and flames.”

Ways To Check Up On Your Builders

By Miles Turner

It is every man or woman s dream to build their dream house and finding the right builders to do the job. Whilst many might wish to have the means to build the houses themselves, not everyone gets their wish to do so.

Finding the perfect home builders that could understand and produce the house you envision is an easy yet very tricky process. It involves a lot of researching, asking questions, comparing and contrasting. Most of the time, despite our best efforts, the builders we pick are okay but just not like the ones we would have wanted.

To help you discern and pick the right home builders, here are some practices that will help in picking out legitimate and top-notch home builders in the market.

1.Check the profiles of Home Builders at government or other accredited home builders organisation websites. There are several organisations that have already been around for a long time. They guide potential home owners in choosing the right home builders for them. In the UK, there s the HBF (Home Builders Federation) for example.

These organisations list all of their accredited members and make them available to the public. People can log into their web sites to look for home builders that will perfectly fit their needs.

2.Employing background check services. This is another good way to find legitimate home builders and avoid phony ones. With so much information available via the internet today, potential home owners can check through records available online for free.

These can include criminal, financial and performance records of the specified home builders through the years. All these info will greatly help in the decision making process with regards to picking out the right home builder for you.

3.Asking the previous customers of a home building company is one of the oldest and surest ways to acquire relevant information about them. It may be friends, relatives, co-workers or other credible people that have experienced and have actually had a home built by the certain home builder.

You can ask them for their personal opinions. Also, ask about the performance of the home builder and the way they grasped their ideas for the homes they wanted built. High satisfaction from former customers can serve as a guarantee that the particular home builder produces quality home building work.

4.Another old school but very effective strategy is to go to exhibits of model units and open houses provided by these home builders. Every home builder will almost always have an open house as a way for them to market and advertise their services. Going to these functions can show potential home owners a thing or two about the style and quality of a builder s work.

Building your dream house needs careful and articulate planning with the help of builders that understand and can fully grasp the idea that you have. It also helps to have builders that can take your idea and even add input into it so as to come up with better results. Either way, with a great home builder, any dream house is possible.

Scientists discover Earth-like planet

Wednesday, January 25, 2006

Correction — August 22, 2006 The source titled Discovery of OGLE 2005-BLG-390Lb, the first cool rocky/icy exoplanet is indicated below as published by the Institut d’astrophysique de Paris. However, the publisher is in fact, the Probing Lensing Anomalies NETwork (PLANET) Collaboration. The error is regretted.
Artist’s impression.

An international group of 73 scientists using 4 projects (PLANET led by Jean-Philippe Beaulieu and Martin Dominik, RoboNet led by MichaelBode and Keith Horne, OGLE led by Andrzej Udalski, and MOA led by Phil Yock) from 32 institutions in 12 countries have discovered the smallest Earth-like planet yet.

The new planet is about 25,000 light years away and is close to the center of the Milky Way.

The discovery was announced in the journal Nature. The journal also states the planet was found using a method called gravitational microlensing, which detects small planets with a mass like that of Earth.

Gravitational microlensing is where a light from a distant star is bent and magnified by the gravitational field of a foreground star. The presence of a planet around the foreground star causes light from the distant star to become momentarily brighter.

However, scientists say that the cold temperatures on the planet make the chance of finding any life on it “unlikely.”

“We may predict with reasonable probability that microlensing will discover planets with masses like that of Earth at a similar distance from their stars and with comparable surface temperature,” said study co-author Bohdan Paczynski from Princeton University.

So far the planet only goes by OGLE-2005-BLG-390Lb, and takes about ten years to orbit its parent star, a red dwarf, a star that is smaller and much cooler than our own Sun.

Scientists say the new planet, which is about five and a half times the mass of Earth, could either have a rocky core and a thin atmosphere, or be a small ice/gas world like Neptune , but in either case, its “very large orbit and cooler parent star, makes it a very cold world.”

The predicted surface temperature is -220° Celsius (-364° F), which means that should it have a rocky core, the planet may more closely resemble a massive version of Pluto with a surface of frozen liquids and gas. Otherwise the planet would be a liquid mass, wrapped in clouds of ice crystals and gas, much like Neptune.

“This is very exciting and important,” said Professor Michael Bode from Liverpool John Moores University, a principal investigator for the RoboNet project which helped to collaborate on the research. “This is the most Earth-like planet we have discovered to date, in terms of its mass and the distance from its parent star. Most of the other planets that have been discovered are either much more massive, much hotter or both.”

This is the third planet in two years that scientists have found using gravitational microlensing.

In the past, more than 150 planets outside our solar system were found using a technique known as the radial velocity method. This method observes a wobble in stars caused by the planet’s gravitational effects.
