CyanogenMod: Open-source smartphone OS goes commercial

Thursday, September 19, 2013

File:CyanogenMod Cid.svg

The developers of CyanogenMod, an open source free Android-based operating system for smartphones, announced yesterday their incorporation following a successful venture capital campaign which netted the open-source project a US$7 million nest egg, and plan to roll out a simple installation app on Google Play for their Android firmware.

Android runs nearly 80% of new mobile devices; CyanogenMod operates on at least 7 or 8 million of those. CyanogenMod replaces the read-only-memory image in android devices which have been ‘rooted’ —control acquired of the device’s superuser account— allowing continuing development for, and backporting abilities of new generations of the operating system to, older devices.

Investor Mitch Lasky wrote on his blog “We believe that CM is poised to become one of the largest mobile operating systems in the world.” Benchmark Capital and Redpoint Ventures are part of the capital providers to form Cyanogen Inc.

“The only limitation we have right now is with the number of engineers and designers we currently have. As we hire more people and build this company, we’ll be able to work on so many cool things”, said Koushik ‘koush’ Dutta, who took questions alongside Steve ‘cyanogen’ Kondik and team social media manager Abhisek “ciwrl” Devkota in a Reddit Ask Me Anything event shortly after making the announcement on the CyanogenMod blog. The team of 17, including Boost co-founder Kirt McMaster as CEO, are in Palo Alto, California and Seattle.

Kondik says Cyanogen mod is named after him. “I’m terrible with names, so I just slapped ‘mod’ onto the end of my handle and ran with it”, he explained in the incorporation announcement.

An early question raised in the Reddit event concerned profit-making: “Monetization isn’t an immediate concern and our investors […] feel the same”, said Dutta, adding “Creating disruption in a multibilion dollar market is enough to make any investor raise their eyebrow.” This means CyanogenMod would continue to be free. Follow questions asked if the company was planning to release their own model of android device. “We certainly couldn’t take on the monumental task of building/testing hardware . Hardware would be one of many potential very long term paths we could take”, said Dutta.

The firm’s first announced step is to improve the process of installing the software on owner’s devices, which Kondik described as “hideous”. A new installer app is planned to be released “in the coming weeks” on Google Play. The installer app will not require rooting the device, instead installing by simply clicking a button.

A further step, broadly described without any details, is a project with an unnamed original equipment manufacturer (OEM). “We have a least one OEM partnership in the works, there will be an announcement next week regarding our plans there”, said Kondik. The team mentioned OEM licensing several times during the Q&A session on Reddit.

In addition to these corporate steps, there were questions regarding the roadmap for development of the ROM, which already has improvements regarding privacy and security over the native android loader. With “plenty of things in the product pipeline already” Dutta lists additional security features, AirPlay mirroring, screen recording, and Voice+ as upcoming. The mood throughout the event was jovial, with humourous questions such as “can you guys PLEASE release a CM build for my toaster? I’m not sure what model it is, but it’s white and I got it at Savers.” Kondik promised “Ship it to me and I’ll duct tape a G1 running CM to it”. Dutta said his “10 of your favorite lines of source code” are “The ones that worked when they shouldn’t have.”

Toyota recalls up to 1.8 million automobiles

Saturday, January 30, 2010

The automobile manufacturer Toyota has said that it will recall up to 1.8 million cars across Europe, after a problem with the accelerator pedal was discovered.

According to the firm, eight models were affected by the problem — AYGO, iQ, Yaris, Auris, Corolla, Verso, Avensis, and RAV4 — after it was discovered that the accelerator may become stuck in a depressed position, resulting in uncontrollable speeding.

On Thursday, Toyota said it would recall 1.1 million cars in the US; a day previous, it had suspended eight models from sales. Last week, 2.3 million cars in the US were recalled due to the pedal issues.

The chief executive of Toyota Motor Europe commented on the recall. “We understand that the current situation is creating concerns and we deeply regret it,” said Tadashi Arashima. The firm, however, noted that it wasn’t aware of any accidents resulted by the malfunctioning accelerator pedals, and not many pedal problem incidents were reported in Europe. “The potential accelerator pedal issue only occurs in very rare circumstances,” Arashima added.

The National Automobile Dealers Association, meanwhile, commented that Toyota showrooms could lose as much as US$2.47 billion worth of revenue due to the incident.

“Toyota veterans will likely hear the news with disbelief and keep faith in the brand, but new customers could definitely be scared off,” remarked Robert Rademacher, who is the president of the trade group ZDK, as quoted by Business Week. “This recall has a dimension which we’ve never seen before.”

There are concerns that the problem may result in reduced consumer trust in Toyota. Hans-Peter Wodniok, an analyst for Fairesearch GmbH & Co. in Germany, noted: “If this is a one-time event, huge as it is, Toyota may be forgiven. But if something happens again in the next months and years, they will have gambled away customer trust in Europe as well.”

Analysts for Morgan Stanley, however, said they believed Toyota would not suffer much from the incident. “The company’s actions to correct the situation are timely enough to avoid major brand damage,” they remarked in a note to investors.

Dental Implants Improve Your Bite

Submitted by: Jon Caldwell

In a completely edentulous case, one replacement method that can be built upon the dental implant is the ball-and-socket removable denture. Overall, the ball-and-socket removable denture is said to be the simplest method that can be used to replace an ill-fitting denture. This may usually need 2-4 implants, depending on the quantity and quality of the bone present in the area. Dentists find that this overdenture is more suited for the lower jaw compared to its fit in the upper jaw. Also, in this overdenture, implants have ball-type inserts which are either screwed or cemented into them in order to fit into an O-ring type attachment sites in the underside of the denture.

Being without teeth or being edentulous can gravely affect how a person functions in daily life. We have learned that a completely edentulous case means that all of the teeth in the upper or lower arch and that there are several replacements which can be used on such a condition. On the other hand, a partially edentulous case means that patients only have some of their natural teeth missing. This could possibly result from mild deterioration of the teeth or from a minor accident. Such case can easily be remedied using two types of replacements: a) The Fixed Bridge where cement or a screw is used, and; b) The Single Tooth Replacement.

Dental implant case types are normally categorized according to whether all or only some of the teeth are missing. Cases are then further classified according to the type of replacement teeth needed to be built on the implants. When a case is classified as completely edentulous, it means that all of the patient s teeth in the upper or lower arch are missing. This could probably be a result of an extreme deterioration of the teeth or of a serious accident. Completely edentulous cases typically requires any of the following types of replacement teeth: a) The Ball and Socket Removable Overdenture; b) The Bar-Retained Removable Overdenture; c) The Screwed-in Fixed Bridge, and; d) The Cemented Fixed Bridge.

Unfortunately, it seems that getting that right dental insurance for implants is harder than one thinks, and if one does find a dental insurance plan that covers dental implants, it will still bring about a certain degree of anxiety since most probably, the total costs of getting dental implants will certainly not be covered by the insurance plan. Yes, that s right talk about insurance headaches. Expect that most insurance providers will agree to pay only a part of the dental procedure (like paying for the co pay for the implant treatment or a percentage of the entire treatment costs). Just be sure to check carefully for the policies that your dental insurance provider has given you so that you can prepare the extra budget needed in getting your dental implants.

We all know how much a dental implant costs nowadays and not being able to prepare financially for such an expensive dental procedure can surely take a toll on your personal savings. That is why it is important to do some extra research on dental insurance plans that can cover dental implants surgery. More often than not, dental insurance plans with implant insurance are more costly than the average dental insurance plan and a lot of patients attest to the difficulty of securing a good implant insurance plan. Some insurance companies even have their patients wait for a year or more before dental implant surgery can be covered. In short, it will be a lot harder for patients to find a suitable dental implant insurance plan so it is highly advisable for them to consider all financial options available.

Penske Auto selected to buy General Motors’ Saturn unit

Friday, June 5, 2009

General Motors Corporation (GM), an American automaker which has filed for bankruptcy protection, announced on Friday that the Penske Automotive Group (PAG) was selected to purchase Saturn Corporation. The transaction should be completed in October.

The purchase includes rights to the Saturn brand, its five current models and its dealership network. Two models would be discontinued, the Sky and Astra. GM would continue building the Aura sedan, the SUV’s, Vue and Outlook for at least two more years.

Saturn has 350 dealers across the United States. The dealers employ more than 13,000 jobs and sell only the Saturn autos. Canadian Saturn dealers are not included in the deal.

According to Penske future Saturn vehicles will be fuel economy focused. An expert indicated that this would move Saturn back to its roots of a entry level car company. PAG is in talks with several international automakers to replace GM after 2011. Automotive News reports that Renault Samsung Motors of Korea is the most likely candidate.

Penske wants Jill Lajdziak, Saturn’s general manager, and Tom LaSorda, former Chrysler President to head up the company when it is independent of GM.

Serra Automotive in Grand Blanc Township, Genesee County, Michigan, is in talks to take a partial ownership in a new Saturn lead by Penske.

Jack Diesing Sr., former chairman of the College World Series, dies age 92

Friday, April 2, 2010

Jack Diesing Sr., former chairman of the College World Series has died at the age of 92. His son announced the cause of death as complications from Parkinson’s disease. Diesing was chairman of the series from 1963 until 2002.

Diesing helped the tournament become one of the most successful college events in the United States. He became chairman in 1963 after his boss at Brandies department store died and passed on his duties to Diesing, one of which was the chairman role.

Before taking the role the series had only made a profit in five of its fourteen years. Under Diesing’s leadership the series never made a loss. During his time as chairman he also negotiated a long term contract with the NCAA and lengthened the series from 5 to 10 games.

Diesing’s son, Jack Diesing Jr., released a statement on his fathers death saying “My dad will be missed by a lot of people, but he won’t be forgotten”. He continued to say that his goals were to make “Omaha a better community” and to secure the “CWS to mantain its legacy”.

At the time of his death Diesing was still chairman emeritus of College World Series of Omaha Inc., a non-profit organization that helped with the coordination of the series.

On Dog Bites And Other Dog Injuries (Part 2)

Precautionary measures are provided by experts and medical practitioners to avoid getting bitten. However, when one gets dog bites, one should know his/her rights, especially when it comes to recovering damages.

If you or a family is bitten by a dog, you should:

try to identify the dog. If the dog has rabies, it is important that you should seek medical care and get the appropriate vaccines against the rabies.

not argue with the owner of the dog. Arguing won’t do any good, especially when the owner doesn’t want to believe what happened. Many owners believe in the goodness of their pets that’s why it’s hard for them to accept that their dog would bite without severe provocation.

not sign any papers or make statements on record. The dog owner, property owner or their insurance company might try to get you to sign papers or record your statements on tape. Take note that their primary goal is to get you to make statements that will help in their cause to avoid possible liabilities for your injuries. If this happens, you should consider having a lawyer present to assist you.

make a report to the police. Report the incident to the police and they will investigate the circumstances of the dog bite. They will then provide a report that may help establish the incident.

seek medical care. The dog that bit you may have rabies. In that case, you will need appropriate vaccines to counter the effects of rabies. On the other hand, dog bites involve puncture wounds from fangs. These can be easily infected. Also, you may have scrapes and abrasions from protecting yourself during the attack. An infected wound can result in a worse scar, and even serious complications and consequences.

consider consulting a lawyer. A reliable lawyer can help you get back your financial losses as well as the emotional and psychological effects from the injuries caused by the incident. Even if the insurance company offers to give you payment, it helps to have a lawyer review the proposed settlement. A lawyer you can trust can help you obtain a fair outcome.

The Law

Different laws on dog bite injuries are provided in different states. In Michigan, victims of dog bites can easily establish liability on the part of the owner. Under Michigan law, it doesn’t matter if the dog has never bitten another person. There is no “free bite rule”. Dog owners are liable even if it’s the first time that they’re dogs bit somebody.

On the other hand, people may also be injured even without getting bitten by a dog. An attack may cause injury through the dog’s claws, when the person was knock over, or when the driver of a bicycle was upset by a dog. If injured, these individuals may file claims, and recover damages from the dog’s owner.

Check your state’s law for information on dog bites.

Victoria Wyndham on Another World and another life

Thursday, December 13, 2007

Victoria Wyndham was one of the most seasoned and accomplished actresses in daytime soap opera television. She played Rachel Cory, the maven of Another World‘s fictional town, Bay City, from 1972 to 1999 when the show went off the air. Wyndham talks about how she was seen as the anchor of a show, and the political infighting to keep it on the air as NBC wanted to wrest control of the long-running soap from Procter & Gamble. Wyndham fought to keep it on the air, but eventually succumbed to the inevitable. She discusses life on the soap opera, and the seven years she spent wandering “in the woods” of Los Angeles seeking direction, now divorced from a character who had come to define her professional career. Happy, healthy and with a family she is proud of, Wyndham has found life after the death of Another World in painting and animals. Below is David Shankbone’s interview with the soap diva.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

‘The Administrators were a disaster for the Shire’: Wikinews interviews Lindsay Love, Tarwin Valley ward candidate in South Gippsland, Australia

Sunday, September 26, 2021

Nominations were declared on Tuesday for South Gippsland Shire’s upcoming council elections, to be held by post from October 5-22. A total of 24 people in the Australian council’s three wards have put themselves forward to stand as candidates. The shire has been governed by administrators appointed by the Victorian state government since August 2019, when the council was sacked after a state government inquiry found “high levels of tension” within the council.

Wikinews interviewed one of the candidates standing in this election, Lindsay Love, via email. Love is contesting the Tarwin Valley ward, which elects three councillors to the South Gippsland Shire Council, and includes the towns of Leongatha and Mirboo North. In addition to her answers to the questions from Wikinews, Love also provided the following statement in regards to the state of the council:

“I also note that the Council satisfaction rating has been dismal for over ten years. That is a period covering various Council terms and the Administrators. The only constant has been the Administration. That would suggest that to improve the culture the change needs to be in the Administration. That means the Council has to operate like a corporate Board and give the CEO the required directions to effect a change.”

Strange But True Car Insurance Claims I Found

Strange but true car insurance claims I found

by

Info Choice Ltd

The saying goes that truth is stranger than fiction and there are many cases to prove it s true. The saying correctly is, Truth is strange, indeed stranger than fiction and was penned by mad, bad Lord Byron who, when he died, was buried in two different countries; his heart in Greece and the rest in England. How s that for proving a point?

But Byron would be challenged for weird and whacky results when it comes to people who make car insurance claims following an accident.

If we have an accident and have insurance, we want to get our vehicle repaired with as little financial pain as possible and we certainly don t want to be sued by the other driver or drivers. Whoever is to blame for the accident, we usually have an inbuilt tendency to follow the old adage, never explain, never apologise . But insurance companies have been around a while and want to reduce their payouts as much as possible.

So we have the situation where the driver wants an out and the insurer wants the facts. And as can be seen, never the twain shall meet.

I mean what does the insurer understand to be the situation at the accident scene when their client states, I swerved to avoid an invisible car and that s when I had the collision ? Or, I was about to collide with the first car so changed direction to avoid that potential collision and then hit the second car . You wonder if the clients are serious when they make such statements as, The other driver changed his mind which caused me to run into his vehicle or The radiator water in my car froze late at night as I was driving which forced me to drive into the ditch .

The mind does boggle at times and you wonder if the claimants are gullible or trying it on. Was the insured hoping to get a payout when he said, I drove into the wrong driveway and hit a tree that is not on my property ? I mean what is the IQ of some motorists when they have to fill-in a claim form after an accident and to the question, Could either driver have done anything reasonable to avoid the accident? writes, One of us could have travelled by bus .

Then the ridiculous and downright dangerous kicks in when one insured driver offered the explanation that, My dog is very possessive about my car but I would never have allowed the dog to drive it if I thought there was any risk .

Mind you telling the truth is always the best policy. One insured person was in control of his car when it struck a cow. On the claim form to the question, What warning was given by the other party? the driver wrote, Moo .

I hope this article helped shed a little light on things to look out for, when it comes time to

lay down money for auto insurance

you should be well informed first.
